No doubt hydroponic gardening is among the most innovative form of growing plants.
However, this form of gardening demands a little more regarding time and resources – nothing good comes easy. Among the things that can have a negative impact on the hydroponics include heat. But how do we deal with it?
This is the job of an aquatic chiller.

Why are Aquatic Chillers Necessary?
Typically aquatic chillers are used in aquariums to keep the temperature down. High temperatures are not always suitable, more so to marine life. The fish become stressed when the water temperature is too high or too low for them.
Stress is not a good thing as it impacts a fish’s immune system negatively and your goldfish can quickly go down with a sort of illness. But what about the hydroponics?
High temperature reduces the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water, and this is not ideal for the plant roots. In the absence of oxygen in the water, plants are likely to choke and die. When it is insufficient, they don’t thrive as you would expect them to – the reason why you go into hydroponics.
Therefore, having the best aquatic chiller avoids such temperature problems for an ideal hydroponic garden.
But that’s not all. Aquatic chillers come with internal filters that clean the air available to the plants. The devices also make sure the plants do not dry out in air-conditioned spaces.
Algae also thrive in stagnant warm polls – a description which hydroponics fit into in the absence of aquatic chillers.
But where does this Heat Come from?
There are various sources of unnecessary heat in hydroponic gardening and among them is lighting and water pumps.
A magnetic impeller works by creating an electric field to pump water, especially in submersible varieties. This process generates heat which transfers to the aquarium water. The larger your water pump, the more the heat it will produce.
But lighting plays a role in the increasing water temperatures. For example, incandescents incorporate potent halide fixtures associated with more heat than other types of bulbs. Fluorescents may be cooler, but they still produce some heat. LED are even better than the incandescents and fluorescents but still radiate some heat to the water – now you see why you need a water chiller?
It’s not only the equipment responsible for making the water warm and unfavorable for aquatic life and hydroponics. There is also the hot weather – you know how summers can be – and lack of sufficient air conditioning. All these factors make having warm water for your hydroponics inevitable.
How do the Aquatic Chillers Work?
Aquatic chillers function by picking the heat from the tank, taking it someplace else. The fundamental principle that aquatic chiller employ is that heat moves to a cold source from a warmer one.
The devices have four main parts: condenser coil, heat exchanger, expansion valve and compressor.
The heat exchange coil is where the cooling starts. Within the coils, the liquid refrigerant evaporates taking in the heat from the water. There’s also the heat exchanger, titanium-constructed to prevent corrosion, which enhances heat transfer to the coils while the compressor draws out the refrigerant vapor.
The condenser then takes over from the compressor, and this is where the refrigerant loses its heat to the air. The work of the fan here is to blow the heat off the condenser coil and enhance the heat removal process.
But the process is not complete. The liquid refrigerant – usually in high-pressure – moves through the expansion valve that reduces its temperatures and pressure and then to the evaporator.
By moving to the chilled coils, the refrigerant loses more heat for an active chilling process.
In the majority of cases in aquaculture, you will find drop-in-chillers where noise is not an issue. These models are large sized, and so they need a significant amount of room to accommodate the large refrigerant hoses and the titanium exchange. However, that’s doesn’t mean that you will have a hard time finding the ideal chiller if yours is a small garden.
There are purpose-built chillers that are compact, quieter and smoother to maintain. They are also a breeze to install.
You will also find a thermostat that indicates the water temperature. You can set the ideal temperature you need to maintain, and the machine will turn on and off to sustain it as is necessary.
Where do you Place the Aquatic Chillers?
For efficiency, you should place the aquatic chillers in an area with sufficient airflow. Setting it in a confined space affects it’s functioning and becomes wasteful in the use of energy. Adequate airflow carries the hot air away ensuring good water cooling mechanism.
As an aspiring hydroponics gardener, you will need the best equipment you can lay your hands on, and that includes aquatic chillers. Choosing any one of the above is not a gamble but a wise decision. However, the best aquatic chiller among them is the Hamilton Technology Aqua Euro Max Aquarium Chiller.
It is heavy-duty equipment that you can use on any size of the reservoir. The chiller boasts features that is hard to find on other chillers of the same calibre. Well worth the investment.
